Understand computer power and availability
Learn which Windows power states allow remote access and what to check when Deskbat reports a computer unavailable.
| State | What it means for access |
|---|---|
| Windows locked | The PC can remain online. Ready unattended access can connect; Windows still requires sign-in. |
| Display off | The computer may still be awake. Check its availability independently of the physical screen. |
| Computer asleep or hibernating | The PC may not be reachable. Wake it and restore connectivity before relying on a session. |
| Shut down or disconnected | The PC cannot accept a normal Deskbat connection. |
| Sharing paused | The PC can be online while deliberately refusing incoming access. Resume sharing locally. |
Check the computer, not just the monitor
A black physical monitor does not tell you whether Windows is locked, the display is off, or the whole PC is asleep. Check Windows power settings and Deskbat’s readiness status. Closing a laptop lid may put the computer to sleep depending on its configuration.
Prepare for working away
Test the intended setup while you can still reach the computer locally. Confirm that the PC remains awake for the required period and is allowed to stay online under your organization’s power policy. Deskbat does not guarantee wake-up of a sleeping or shut-down PC.
